When Pell City High School needed to upgrade its aging bathroom floors, they wanted a clean, durable and low-maintenance solutionโ€”but without the mess and downtime of removing old tile. Working with architect recommendations, installer Ray Boles of Prattville Carpet partnered with Stauf USA to deliver a seamless resinous flake floor using the new Epoxy Tile System (ETS).

The Challenge

Years of heavy foot traffic had taken a toll on the schoolโ€™s tile floors. Grout lines were stained, difficult to clean and had developed persistent odor issues. The school wanted a modern, antimicrobial surface that could extend up the walls, improve hygiene and eliminate grout maintenanceโ€”without demolishing the existing tile.

The Solution

Staufโ€™s Epoxy Tile System (ETS) is a multi-step, high-performance resinous system designed to go directly over tile. The system is designed for spaces including schools, healthcare, and public restrooms needing durable upgradesโ€” without the dust, downtime or cost of demolition.

Step 1. Surface Prep โ€“ Existing tile and grout were scrubbed with a pH-neutral detergent, rinsed and dried. Damaged tiles and missing grout were repaired using EFP-290.

Step 2. Moisture Barrier and Base Layer โ€“ To prevent grout line ghosting, ERP-270 was applied via trowel at 70 sq. ft./gal. with added sand for strength and vertical coverage up the wall.

Step 3. Crack Isolation and Flake Broadcast โ€“ A 1/32โ€ layer of ULC-500 was troweled and backrolled to remove air bubbles. ULC-500 was also applied to the wall with a putty knife. 1/4โ€ decorative flakes were broadcast immediately into the wet coating.

Step 4. Topcoat Application โ€“ After curing, the flakes were scraped, vacuumed and sealed with CCO-652โ€”a 100% solids polyurethane topcoat offering exceptional scratch and chemical resistance.

The school wanted a modern, antimicrobial surface that could extend up the walls, improve hygiene and eliminate grout maintenance, without demolishing existing tile.

Pro Tips:

  • Use a blue-textured roller to reduce pinholes
  • Mix 10 lbs. of sand into ERP-270 for a level surface

The Results

The Stauf Epoxy Tile System delivered a durable, hygienic and slip-resistant floor with seamless transition up the wall. The new surface is easy to clean, resists odor absorption and adds visual appeal without disrupting the schoolโ€™s operations.

โ€œStaufโ€™s ETS solution gave our client everything they asked forโ€”durability, hygiene and zero tile demo,โ€ Boles noted.
