The Forum at Hope Haven — Prepping the Floor for a Community Resource

Project: Renovating an old gym floor by providing moisture mitigation and floor preparation for successful flooring installation

Hope Haven campus, a therapeutic community in Charlotte, N.C., provides recovery support for those impacted by substance abuse. The campus includes a 6,000 square foot conference center, which was previously a gym, used by residents and staff for events, meetings and training. The building was constructed in the 1960s and needed a renovation and facelift, according to Kristin Blinson, Hope Haven CEO.

The renovated space completed in early 2023, named The Forum, will be a resource for local outreach organizations and partners to gather and work together for the Charlotte community. Training, events, meetings and more will be held in the newly renovated space.

Renovation began with VCT removal and concrete prep. A moisture test revealed significant moisture issues requiring a mitigation system to control the moisture vapor emission rate and prevent a failure with the new floor covering. Incorporating the mitigation system into the project added additional cost to Hope Haven’s tight budget as a non-profit organization. The additional funds needed for a moisture mitigation system posed a challenge to complete the floor renovation.

All South Flooring, working with Hope Haven to select and install new LVP flooring in the conference center, consulted with Maxxon Corporation for their expertise in subfloor preparation. Together, All South and Maxxon developed an exceptional solution to properly address the moisture issues and protect the new flooring for years to come.

Maxxon Commercial Isolate was the foundation of the subfloor prep solution. Isolate was selected because it manages the migration of moisture vapor and prevents other contaminants from adversely affecting floor coverings. The two-part epoxy addresses concrete slabs with RH levels up to 100%. Isolate does not require a concrete surface profile, so the contractor was able to skip the step of mechanically profiling the slab, saving time and money.

Isolate requires a  4-to-6-hour cure time after it is rolled onto the slab. Maxxon Commercial Multi-Use Acrylic was then applied to increase the bond with the installation of Maxxon Commercial Level EZ™. Level EZ is a hydraulic cement-based self-leveler that is low-prep and highly flowable. It produces an exceptionally smooth, durable and flat surface. With compressive strengths above 5000 PSI, it was the ideal solution for smoothing and capping the concrete subfloor for the installation of the finished flooring covering.

With Maxxon’s subfloor system fully installed utilizing Isolate as the moisture barrier and Level EZ as the smooth, prepared surface, All South Flooring was able to install new luxury vinyl plank (LVP) flooring, resulting in a beautiful resilient floor for The Forum at Hope Haven. The renovated space provides the community with a resource to bring organizations together as well as to provide a safe and healthy environment for the residents.

All South Flooring led the charge to provide the assistance needed by Hope Haven. The Maxxon team supplied not only a subfloor prep solution but also donated the products to prep and prepare the subfloor properly.
