FCICA recently held its 2021 Annual Convention and Commercial Flooring Trade Show, Sept. 13-15 in Austin, Texas, drawing 150 people and 34 exhibitors. According to the association, “the event went smoothly, the feedback was positive and attendees were very happy to reunite with their fellow flooring professionals.”
Flooring industry professionals, commercial flooring contractors, distributors, manufacturers and consultants came to the event for two days of meetings—featuring an opening keynote, a trade show, four education sessions, four product demonstrations and a multitude of networking opportunities.
The event kicked off with an evening welcome reception on Sept. 13 in the AT&T Hotel courtyard, giving attendees a chance to socialize and network. The following morning opened with remarks from FCICA Board Chair Pat Kelly of Synergy Flooring, then a keynote by Harold Chapman, the former president and CEO of Bonitz.
Chapman’s presentation, “Success in Challenging Times,” included insights into current industry challenges while also focusing on business opportunities to help ensure a successful future. The keynote was sponsored by RFMS.
During the Business Meeting, FCICA Board Vice Chair Mike Roberts was recognized as an Honorary Lifetime Member. Formerly a managing partner at Bonitz, Roberts was given the designation “in recognition of his distinguished service to FCICA,” according to the association.
Another highlight was an education session from Jeffrey Johnson, MAPEI marketing manager for floor covering installation systems and retail business. He presented “How Do High Moisture-Resistant Products Work in High-Moisture Conditions, and How Can They Still Fail with All the Claims Made?”
Rounding out the first day were product demonstrations from Maxxon and Bona US, and a four-hour trade show followed by a happy hour and themed dinner, “Keep Austin Weird.”
The slate for the second day of the convention included three education sessions, product demonstrations from Ardex Americas and Laticrete International, a contractor meeting and silent auction.
Ron Nash, president of Laticrete North America, kicked off the education sessions with “What Went Wrong in 2021 and How Are We Going to Move on From It?” This was followed by Daniel Grant, Ardex technical field representative, presenting “Ceramic Tile in the Commercial Environment,” and Shane Jenkins, senior technical coordinator of Schönox/HPS North America, with “Managing Customer Expectations for Polished Concrete Floors.”
FCICA board members thanked outgoing members Sonny Callaham, Divergent Adhesives; Carson Cole, F L Crane and Sons; and Paul Meberg, Consolidated Carpet. Incoming board members include Don Styka, Tarkett; Jesse Tranel, DCO Commercial Floors; and John West, F L Crane and Sons.
